Prediction market odds often differ from those found at traditional sportsbooks, reflecting the wisdom of the crowd versus the assessments of professional oddsmakers. Sportsbooks may incorporate factors like public perception or promotional considerations into their lines, while this market is driven purely by individuals wagering their own capital. Discrepancies can arise from differing information access, biases, or simply a different interpretation of the likely outcome. It's common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information, as they are continuously updated by traders reacting to events.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective intelligence of all participants, creating a real-time forecast of the event's likely result. The current implied probabilities are shaped by the ongoing trading activity.
