Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides of a bet and ensure profitability. This market, however, allows anyone to express their beliefs, potentially uncovering information not fully captured by traditional oddsmakers. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the dynamic nature of a decentralized market responding to new information as it becomes available. Comparing these odds can offer a broader perspective on the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and is not influenced by external factors or predetermined values. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing system driven by the collective intelligence of the traders.
