Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different set of information and incentives compared to traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while prediction markets aim to represent the true probability of an outcome as determined by traders. It’s common to see differences, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts. Analyzing these discrepancies can be valuable, as prediction markets sometimes offer more accurate forecasts, particularly when there's significant trading volume and informed participation. However, sportsbook odds still represent a useful benchmark for comparison.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts accordingly. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is driven entirely by supply and demand, meaning that if many traders believe a particular outcome is likely, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of its participants.
