Typically, prediction market odds offer a distinct perspective compared to traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, aiming to profit regardless of the outcome. This market, driven by the wisdom of the crowd on Polymarket, tends to reflect more purely the probability of an event occurring, though discrepancies can arise due to differing information or risk assessments. It’s common to see prediction markets outperform sportsbooks in accuracy, especially when there’s significant public interest and trading activity.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, its price increases, indicating a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price movements are driven by supply and demand, with traders constantly adjusting their positions based on new information and their own analysis of the match. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date collective prediction.
