Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on their own analysis, which may be influenced by factors like public perception or biases. This market, however, allows anyone to participate and express their belief about the outcome, potentially leading to more accurate probabilities as more information becomes available. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of information, analytical approaches, and the incentive structures of each venue. It's common to see prediction markets converge towards the true outcome probability as the event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, indicating a higher perceived probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and reflects the collective intelligence of the traders participating. This dynamic pricing ensures the market remains responsive to new information and changing perspectives.
