Prediction market odds often differ from those offered by traditional sportsbooks, reflecting the 'wisdom of the crowd' versus the assessments of professional oddsmakers. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the likely outcome. This can lead to discrepancies, particularly when there’s strong public sentiment or information not fully captured by sportsbook algorithms. It’s common to see prediction markets react more quickly to new information and potentially offer more accurate probabilities than traditional betting venues.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The platform uses a decentralized approach, meaning prices are determined solely by supply and demand within the market itself, rather than by a central authority setting the odds.
