Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, aiming to balance risk and profit. This market, however, allows anyone to participate and express their beliefs, which can lead to odds that diverge from sportsbook lines, especially as new information emerges. It’s common to see prediction markets incorporate information faster than sportsbooks, particularly regarding unexpected developments or shifts in public perception.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, and it’s constantly adjusting based on new information and changing sentiment. The current trading volume indicates the level of interest in the various possible results.
