Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, while Polymarket allows traders to directly assess probabilities. This can lead to differences in implied probabilities, especially when there's strong public sentiment or information asymmetry. It's common to see this market price in factors not fully accounted for by sportsbooks, such as subtle player form or tactical adjustments. Comparing these odds can reveal where the 'wisdom of the crowd' diverges from professional analysis.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market dynamically adjusts to new information and changing sentiment, creating a real-time assessment of the event's likelihood. This differs from fixed-odds betting, as the odds are not set by a bookmaker but are determined by the collective actions of traders.
