Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set initial odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, but can be influenced by factors like public betting patterns and risk management. This market, like others, may show divergence from sportsbook lines due to differing information or interpretations. It’s common to see prediction markets incorporate information faster than sportsbooks, especially for events with a lot of public attention and available data.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event's likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price indicates what traders are willing to pay for a share, and therefore their expectation of the result. The market’s efficiency depends on active participation and the availability of relevant information.
