Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on their own models and risk management, while this market is driven by individual predictions and the willingness to buy or sell based on those beliefs. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply variations in how each assesses the probabilities of the riders. Comparing these odds can be a useful exercise for informed bettors, but it’s important to understand the underlying dynamics of each.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price of shares will fluctuate, providing a dynamic assessment of the race’s potential winner. The current price indicates the collective expectation of the outcome, and traders can capitalize on perceived mispricings by buying low and selling high.
