Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance action, while this market is driven purely by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is undervaluing a particular outcome, they can drive the price on Polymarket to reflect their collective assessment. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before a lot of money has been wagered on either side, as information asymmetry plays a role.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous exchange mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different outcomes. The price of each share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a specific outcome, its price increases, and the probability rises accordingly. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market depth and trading activity influence price movements, with larger volume generally leading to more stable and accurate pricing. This dynamic pricing reflects the aggregated beliefs of all participants trading on Polymarket.
