Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may also incorporate a profit margin. This market, driven by traders on Polymarket, represents a more fluid assessment of probabilities as participants react to news and information. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before a significant event or when there’s considerable uncertainty surrounding the outcome. Comparing the two can offer a broader perspective on potential results.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where participants buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. Conversely, selling pressure drives the price down. This dynamic process ensures that the market price constantly adjusts to incorporate new information and collective intelligence.
