Often, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on their own analysis, while this market’s odds are determined by traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the outcome. If a significant discrepancy exists, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by simultaneously betting on both platforms. However, it’s important to note that sportsbooks and prediction markets have different cost structures and cater to different types of bettors, which can contribute to these differences.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different outcomes. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, indicating higher confidence in that result. Conversely, selling pressure decreases the price. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds continuously adjust to incorporate new information and changing sentiment.
