Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on power rankings and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is undervaluing or overvaluing a particular outcome, the prediction market price will adjust accordingly. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the collective intelligence of the prediction market participants. It’s common to see prediction markets outperform traditional odds over time.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of each share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust to reflect the collective assessment of the event's potential results. The current top outcome, as indicated by share price, is the one that traders collectively believe is most likely to happen.
