Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, which can sometimes differ from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines to balance their risk, while this market is driven purely by participants’ beliefs about the outcome. It's common to see discrepancies, especially when there’s significant public information or debate surrounding an event. These differences can present opportunities for traders who believe the market has mispriced the probability of a particular result. Examining these differences can reveal insights into public perception versus informed speculation.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts accordingly, providing a dynamic assessment of the event's likelihood. This creates a constantly updating forecast based on the aggregated opinions of those trading in the market. The current price indicates what the collective market believes is the probability of a specific outcome.
