Prediction market odds often differ from those found at traditional sportsbooks due to the wisdom of the crowd effect. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on analyst predictions, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs, potentially leading to more accurate probabilities as more information becomes available. If sportsbooks heavily favor one player, but volume suggests a more competitive match on Polymarket, it indicates a divergence in expectations. This difference can present opportunities for informed traders to capitalize on discrepancies between the two.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each player winning. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the match's potential result. The market’s efficiency is driven by the incentives for traders to accurately predict the outcome, as profitable trades are rewarded.
