Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, which can differ from those set by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set odds to maximize profit, factoring in a margin for themselves, while this market relies on participants directly wagering on the outcome. Therefore, you might observe discrepancies between the implied probabilities on Polymarket and those offered by sportsbooks, potentially indicating areas where the market believes there's value or where sportsbooks have mispriced the event. It's a useful comparison for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe a particular outcome is likely, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will rise. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event’s probability.
