Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often incorporating information and analysis beyond what’s readily available to traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and risk assessment, this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. As a result, you may find that the implied probabilities on Polymarket differ from those offered by sportsbooks, particularly as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts. It’s a useful exercise to compare the two to see where the discrepancies lie and understand the reasoning behind them.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a specific outcome. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, with the platform ensuring that the total value of all shares adds up to 1. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust expectations.
