Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of participants, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on statistical models and the need to balance action on both sides, while this market is driven purely by individuals’ willingness to buy or sell based on their own analysis. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. Examining these differences can reveal insights into public perception and potential value opportunities.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand, with no central authority setting the odds. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing system.
