Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, the odds on Polymarket may move in the opposite direction. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially when new information emerges or public sentiment shifts, making this market a valuable comparison point to traditional betting outlets.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the collective intelligence of the traders on the platform. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date information and sentiment.
