Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of participants, potentially differing from those set by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market is driven purely by traders expressing their beliefs about the outcome. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially when public sentiment strongly favors one outcome. Examining these differences can offer valuable insights into where the crowd believes the value lies compared to professional oddsmakers.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous, decentralized exchange mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by the collective actions of all traders participating in the market. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date information and sentiment.
