Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and risk management, while this market is driven by individual predictions and trading activity. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply varying interpretations of the players’ strengths. It’s common to see prediction markets incorporate information faster than sportsbooks, especially in response to late-breaking news or shifts in public opinion.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares, the price increases, indicating growing confidence in that outcome. Conversely, increased selling pressure lowers the price. The market dynamically adjusts to reflect the aggregated predictions of all participants, creating a real-time assessment of the event’s likelihood.
