Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially early in the market's life cycle, as prediction markets can incorporate information and react to news more quickly. Comparing the two can provide a more comprehensive view of the expected outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of the event occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market is entirely driven by supply and demand, meaning the price fluctuates based on the collective actions of all participants. This creates a dynamic and real-time assessment of the potential result.
