Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the opinions of many individuals. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before a significant amount of trading occurs. Comparing the odds can reveal where the crowd believes there is value, or where they disagree with the sportsbook's assessment of the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective expectation. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The platform’s design encourages efficient price discovery, as traders are incentivized to provide accurate predictions. The current implied probability of a particular outcome is determined by the share price relative to $1.
