Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs, potentially leading to a more accurate assessment of the likely outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of information, biases, or simply variations in opinion. It's common to see prediction markets react more quickly to new information and adjust probabilities accordingly, offering a potentially more dynamic view than static sportsbook lines.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, ultimately reflecting the collective prediction of the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This means that if many traders believe Josh Manuel will win, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa. The current price of a share indicates the implied probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by the traders on Polymarket.
