Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, which represents their profit margin. This market, driven by the collective wisdom of traders, aims to represent the true probability of an event occurring, though discrepancies can still arise due to differing information or risk assessments. It's common to see prediction markets more accurately reflect probabilities, especially as more information becomes available and trading volume increases. Comparing the two can provide a more nuanced understanding of the expected outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the prices adjust to reflect the evolving consensus. The market's depth, indicated by trading volume, also influences price stability and accuracy. Currently, the market is driven by the collective predictions of those actively trading on Polymarket.
