Prediction market odds often differ from traditional sportsbook odds due to the wisdom of the crowd effect. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and risk assessment, while this market reflects the collective predictions of many individual traders. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, they can express that view by trading on Polymarket, potentially driving the odds in a different direction. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before a large amount of trading volume occurs.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who buy shares in a specific outcome, the higher its price will climb, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing reflects the aggregated intelligence of the market participants, creating a real-time forecast of the match's result.
