Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. If sportsbooks and the prediction market disagree significantly, it could indicate that traders possess unique information or a different perspective on the players' chances. It's important to note that prediction markets can sometimes offer more favorable odds than sportsbooks, especially when there's disagreement.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, indicating a growing expectation of that result. Conversely, selling pressure drives prices down. This dynamic process creates a real-time assessment of probabilities based on the collective intelligence of the traders.
