Prediction market odds often reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring profitability, while this market allows traders to directly assess probabilities. This can lead to discrepancies, as prediction markets aggregate the wisdom of the crowd, potentially identifying mispriced outcomes. It's common to see this market diverge from sportsbook lines, especially when public opinion strongly disagrees with the sportsbook's initial assessment. Analyzing these differences can reveal valuable insights into how informed the market believes traders are.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders believe an outcome is likely, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will rise, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of those trading on the platform, offering a real-time assessment of the match's potential results.
