Often, prediction market odds reflect a different set of information and incentives than traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, and may be influenced by public betting patterns. This market, however, is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs, potentially leading to odds that more accurately reflect the true underlying probabilities. Discrepancies can arise from differing expert opinions, access to unique information, or simply variations in risk assessment among market participants.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, indicating a higher perceived probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, reflecting the collective wisdom of its users. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly adapt to new information and changing expectations.
