Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring profit regardless of the outcome, while this market allows traders to directly assess probabilities. This can lead to differences in implied probabilities, especially when there's strong public sentiment or information asymmetry. It's common to see this market converge towards what many believe is the 'true' probability of an event, as traders are incentivized to find and act on valuable information. Examining both can offer a more comprehensive view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the market's collective prediction. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to represent the aggregated view of the crowd. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price indicates the probability that a particular outcome will occur, and traders aim to profit by correctly anticipating the event's result. The market's efficiency depends on the number of participants and the information they bring to bear.
