Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant discrepancy exists between the two, opportunities for arbitrage may arise. It’s common to see prediction markets move faster than sportsbooks to incorporate new information, as they are continuously updated by a large and diverse group of participants. Examining both can provide a more comprehensive view of potential outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. Conversely, selling pressure decreases the price. This dynamic process ensures that the market price reflects the collective intelligence of all participants trading on Polymarket.
