Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set odds to maximize profit, incorporating a margin for themselves, while this market relies on participants directly assessing probabilities. If sportsbook odds show a strong favorite, this market might present a different view if traders believe the sportsbook is undervaluing a particular outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, analytical approaches, or simply varying levels of confidence in the event's potential results. It's a useful comparison for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event's likelihood. The market's efficiency is driven by the incentives for traders to accurately predict the outcome and profit from their insights.
