Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often incorporating information and analysis faster than traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert opinions, this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs, potentially leading to odds that more accurately represent the true probability of an outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of information, biases, or simply variations in opinion between prediction market participants and sportsbook bettors. It’s useful to compare both to gain a broader perspective.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a specific outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence. Conversely, selling pressure drives the price down. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants trading on Polymarket.
