Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks may set initial lines based on expert analysis and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant difference emerges, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by simultaneously betting on both platforms. However, it's common to see convergence as more information becomes available and more people participate in this market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more shares purchased for a particular outcome, the higher its price rises, reflecting increased confidence. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds constantly adjust to incorporate new information and changing sentiment among traders.
