Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market relies on the collective wisdom of traders. If a significant difference emerges between the two, it could indicate that prediction market participants possess information not yet fully priced into sportsbook lines, or have a different assessment of the players’ strengths. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before an event gains widespread attention.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, signaling a growing expectation of that result. The market’s price movements are driven entirely by trader activity and their interpretations of available information.
