Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market incorporates the diverse perspectives of many individual traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or risk assessments. If significant differences exist, it may suggest an opportunity for arbitrage, where traders can profit by simultaneously betting on both platforms. However, it’s important to consider transaction fees and potential slippage.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand, with traders adjusting their positions based on new information and their own analysis of the match. This creates a dynamic and efficient price discovery process.
