Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by individuals freely trading based on their own analysis, potentially leading to more accurate probabilities, especially as the event approaches. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, biases, or levels of expertise among participants in each venue. It's valuable to compare both to form a well-rounded perspective.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing reflects the collective intelligence of the market participants. The current price indicates the market’s assessment of the likelihood of each player winning the match, constantly updating with each trade.
