Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often incorporating information and analysis beyond what's readily available to traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert opinions, this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs, potentially leading to more accurate probabilities as the event approaches. Differences can arise due to varying levels of information access, differing risk assessments, and the incentive structures of each venue. It’s common to see prediction markets react more quickly to breaking news or shifts in public perception than traditional betting options.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market dynamically adjusts as new information emerges and traders update their assessments. This creates a constantly evolving probability distribution based on collective intelligence, offering a unique perspective compared to static odds.
