Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often include a 'vig' or commission built into their odds, representing their profit margin. This market, driven by the collective wisdom of traders on Polymarket, aims to represent the true probability of an event occurring, though discrepancies can arise due to differing information or risk assessments. It's common to see prediction markets more accurately reflect probabilities, especially as an event approaches, as traders adjust their positions based on new information and analysis.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a specific outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market dynamically adjusts to reflect the aggregated opinions of all participants, creating a real-time assessment of the event's potential results. This creates a fluid and responsive pricing system.
