Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and often incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to freely express their beliefs. If there's a significant discrepancy, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by simultaneously betting on both the prediction market and a sportsbook. It’s common to see this market adjust rapidly to new information, potentially leading to odds movements that diverge from initial sportsbook offerings.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price will fluctuate, reflecting the collective assessment of the participants.
