Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often incorporating information and analysis beyond what is readily available to traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert opinions, this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs, potentially leading to odds that more accurately predict the actual outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of information, biases, or simply the dynamics of supply and demand within each venue. It’s common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information than sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting a growing consensus. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined entirely by supply and demand, with traders adjusting their positions based on new information and their own analysis of the match.
