Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market relies on the collective wisdom of traders. This can lead to discrepancies, particularly when there's strong public sentiment or information asymmetry. If a large number of traders believe a sportsbook is mispricing the probability of a certain outcome, they can express that view in this market, potentially driving the odds in a different direction than those found at sportsbooks. It’s a fascinating comparison of different forecasting methods.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of each share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust its forecast accordingly. The total volume traded provides insight into how much conviction traders have in their predictions for the M15 Bali tennis match.
