Prediction market odds often reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks primarily cater to casual bettors and incorporate a margin for profit, prediction markets allow participants to trade based on their own research and analysis. This can lead to odds that are more efficient and accurate, particularly as the event approaches. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, as prediction markets can incorporate information from a wider range of sources and are less susceptible to biases present in sportsbook pricing.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous exchange where traders buy and sell shares representing different outcomes. The price of each share reflects the market's collective belief about the probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market depth and trading volume influence how quickly prices adjust to new information. Traders aim to profit by identifying mispriced outcomes and taking positions accordingly, contributing to the overall efficiency of the market.
