Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of participants, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and risk management, while this market is driven by individuals freely trading based on their own analysis. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially when there's significant public interest or disagreement about the likely outcome. Comparing the two can be a valuable exercise in understanding where the crowd differs from professional oddsmakers, and potentially identifying undervalued opportunities.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people trade, the price adjusts to reflect the evolving consensus. The current implied probability of a particular outcome is determined by the share price relative to $1, with higher prices indicating a greater perceived likelihood of success. This dynamic pricing system allows for real-time adjustments based on new information and changing sentiment.
