Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from those set by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates insights from individuals with varying levels of knowledge. If sportsbook odds suggest a clear favorite, this market might show a more nuanced view if participants believe the sportsbook is undervaluing a particular outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access, biases, or simply a different interpretation of the event's probabilities. It’s a fascinating comparison of different forecasting approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of different outcomes. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Trading volume and order book depth also influence price discovery, providing signals about market sentiment and potential shifts in expectations. This dynamic pricing system aims to accurately reflect the collective forecast of all participants.
