Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to express their own independent assessments. If a significant discrepancy exists between prediction market probabilities and sportsbook odds, it may indicate that the market perceives information differently than traditional bookmakers. This can be due to unique insights or a more accurate aggregation of available data, though sportsbook odds are often more readily available to the general public.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are traded, the price adjusts to reflect the collective sentiment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. For example, a share priced at 60 means there’s a 60% implied probability of that outcome being correct, according to the traders on Polymarket. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date information.
