Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, and can sometimes differ from those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their odds to maximize profit, factoring in house edges and perceived public biases. This market, however, is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a particular outcome is more likely than sportsbooks suggest, the odds on Polymarket will adjust accordingly, potentially offering value to informed bettors. It's important to compare odds across sources to identify potential discrepancies.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price reflects the aggregated sentiment of all participants trading on Polymarket, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the match's likely result. This contrasts with fixed-odds betting where prices are set by the bookmaker.
