Frequently, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. This can occur because prediction markets allow for more diverse information to be incorporated into pricing, including insights from a wider range of participants. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market benefits from the wisdom of the crowd. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions on factors like player form, potential injuries, or even external influences not fully captured by standard sportsbook algorithms. It's common to see differences in implied probabilities.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived chance of success. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The platform uses a constant product market maker model, meaning the product of the share prices for all possible outcomes remains constant, ensuring that there's always a market for traders to express their views. This dynamic pricing adjusts in real-time based on supply and demand.
