Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set odds to maximize profit, incorporating a margin for themselves, while this market relies on traders directly expressing their beliefs about the likelihood of each outcome. If sportsbook odds suggest a clear favorite, it's interesting to observe whether this market agrees, or if traders perceive value in the less favored outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, analytical approaches, or simply varying levels of confidence.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price of shares will fluctuate, providing a dynamic assessment of the event's potential results. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand for these shares on Polymarket.
